Principal News
Dear Families,
The end of the school year is almost here and the next two weeks are certainly filled to the brim with end-of-year activities and events. Reports have been written and final assessments awarded in preparation for these to be sent home on Friday 10 December. Class placements and teacher allocations are almost finalised, with new teaching staff for our PE and Quality Teaching Coach (Numeracy) positions still to be confirmed. Our complete staff list for 2022 will be published in the Week 10 newsletter, following our Step-Up Day session on Monday 13 December where all K-Year 5 students will get to meet their 2022 class group and teacher. I look forward to our end of year celebration assembly next Thursday, 9 December at THS Gym, starting at 1pm. Bookings are essential due to restrictions in venue capacity. Please contact the office on 6227 8325 or email taroona.primary@education.tas.gov.au
Taroona Primary School Gender and Sexual Diversity Policy
Last week was significant, for both our school and the Department of Education, with the finalisation and endorsement by the TPSA, staff, students and community members of the Taroona Primary School Gender and Sexual Diversity Policy.
The aim of this policy is to ensure all students are provided with equal opportunities to reach their potential, irrespective of sex, gender identity or sexuality. Central is the view that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender diverse, non-binary, intersex, queer / questioning and asexual (LGBTIQA+) students, educators, family and community members have the right to access inclusive education and environments. The policy outlines eight key implementation areas; best practice approaches to affirming and supporting gender diverse and sexually diverse students, educators and family members.
This is the first policy of its kind to be developed by a Tasmanian school and endorsed by its community, and has been described as "ground breaking" and "a fantastic achievement to be celebrated and shared" by the Department of Education's LGBTI School Inclusion Officer, Xris Reardon.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to all policy working group members, including parents, staff and students, for their ongoing input and support into this policy over the past 12 months. I would also like to congruatulate our school community in delivering and endorsing a new policy that ensures all students, staff and families at TPS are provided with a safe and supportive environment where everyone can learn free from discrimination.

Student Parliament Executive 2022
Congratulations to all nineteen candidates who nominated themselves for the 2022 Student Parliament Executive. Our future leaders courageously presented detailed speeches in front of the senior students and their teachers and it was wonderful to note that all students on the ballot card received a number of votes when counting was completed.
It is my pleasure to formally announce to the school community our elected Student Parliament Executive for 2022:
- Prime Minister – Roland H
- Leader of the Opposition – Henry S
- Portfolio Holders: Molly O, Mia C, Lux J & Poppy W
I look forward to hearing more student ideas and seeing new projects come to life under the leadership of this amazing group of Year 6 leaders.

Best wishes
Danielle Bresnehan

Hobart City Mission Christmas Appeal
On Wednesday 24 November we held a Free Dress Day to raise money for the Hobart City Mission Christmas Appeal.
We received an abundance of non-perishable food donations that were packed into 15 boxes! Once again, the Conference Room table was overflowing as more donations arrived throughout the morning. Our Student Parliament also raised $118.30 through their Skittles Tournament which was also donated to the Hobart City Mission to help those in need this Christmas.

Early Childhood Sports Carnival
Today the Kinder to Year 2 children eagerly participated in their annual Sports Carnival, with the assistance of our Year 6 House Captains and Vice Captains. The novelty events were huge fun for everyone, with the teddy race a favourite for most. A huge thank you once again to Kylie Broadbent for organising another wonderful event for our children and community.

Christmas Cookie Competition
On Monday, we held a Christmas Cookie Competition. Students were asked to decorate a cookie in a festive way. Check out some of the amazing designs! We saw everything from trees, reindeer, stars, wreaths, gingerbread houses and a unicorn. This was certainly an exciting way to start our Monday! The cookies were judged soley on decoration and not on taste!
We organised the cookies into groups, Kinder-Year 2, Year 3-4 and Year 5-6 and a winner was selected from each category by anonymous vote.

TPSA Tea Towel Update
Thanks to everyone who ordered a tea towel!
They will be distributed to students next week.
A short survey will also be sent out next week regarding similar fundraisers in the future.

The Leaver's Cruise will be held on Monday, 13 December. Please ensure that you and your child arrive at Brooke Street Pier at 5.30pm, so as to leave enough time for photos with friends before the cruise departs at 6.00pm.
