Principal News
Dear Families,
In our last newsletter I provided an overview of work that has begun with staff in reviewing our school vision and planning for school improvement into 2022 and beyond. I invited families to respond to the question: What do we want our children to be like as adults? I am very keen to hear your thoughts and have set up an online form to collate ideas and inform our future planning. Please click on this link to contribute to the discussion.

Community Consultation RE National Anthem & Upcoming Community Forum Celebration
After discussions at TPS Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group meetings this year, I invited everyone in our school community to think about our National Anthem, and what it means to them. I sent out a survey to the community asking for input and I received over 300 comments from staff, families and students throughout the survey period. From the responses, it was clear that for different people our National Anthem means different things, and of course we recognise that that’s ok.
There were three main themes that came through the survey comments:
- Having a song to unite us at the start of an assembly is really important
- Some people like to sing, others don’t, so it’s good to have a choice
- That many people believe it is time that we find other songs to sing at the start of our assemblies; songs that support our work in acknowledging the rich diversity and the long history of our country, dating back 40,000 years until today.
Therefore, following community consultation, it has been decided that we will play other songs at the start of our assemblies. Songs that provide us with an opportunity to think about our supportive community here at Taroona.
It is important to note that the National Anthem will still be taught at school, with children learning about when it was written and why, as well as learning about the official occasions when it is expected to be sung and the protocols that we are to use when singing the anthem.
Next Wednesday, interested community members are invited to come to the school and celebrate the work our community has progressed throughout 2021 in both Reconciliation Action Planning and Diversity Planning. Please see the flier below for all details and how to register to attend.

PE - Term 4
Our Prep to Year 2 students are doing the Hurricanes Captains Challenge focusing on throwing, catching and bouncing a small ball and working in pairs or teams to complete skills and games each week. Students are learning to repeat tasks to become successful and how to change their throw to help others catch. Captain Hurricane is very inspiring!
Our Kinder to Year 2 students have a busy term as we also preparing for our ECE Sports Carnival on Wednesday 1 December. Students are practising their throwing, running, jumping, relays and more.
Our Year 3-6 students have been working on the skills of T-ball throwing and catching with a glove, hitting off the tee and learning the rules and strategies of the game of T-ball. We have just started an inaugural T-ball team with Year 5/6 students having been playing against Mount Nelson and Waimea Heights Primary School. Our school values resilience, respect, collaboration, excellence, and creativity have been demonstrated during our games. There have been some outstanding hitters, catches and game play in our T-ball games so far.

Global Cafe
The Global Café is a group of ten children across the classes of 5-6 A and 5-6 B.
In Global Café we design and create sustainable changes to the school. Our main project for this year has been sustaining the awareness of Aboriginal culture.
Across the year we have planned a space in the school to educate children about the importance of aboriginal culture and history.
Every week we had a set time to discuss our ideas and understandings to form an action plan. We felt it was important for all students to understand how significant the history of our beloved land was and is continuing to be.
In first term we just planned and brewed ideas. Then an idea stared to form.
In second term we realised our original space we had in mind was unavailable, so we had to compromise a lot, and alternate our ideas.
In third term, we made a solid plan of what we wanted and how we were going to get to it.
In fourth term we got the TPSA involved and got an allowance for our design. We got some parents in to help us bring our ideas to life. We also worked alongside Kieran, our aboriginal educator, to determine what native plants to use, an acknowledgement of country and signs for the plants.
We have created a space for children and adults alike to learn our history of Taroona and the lands surrounding.
Our walk is called pulingina panupiri meaning ‘Welcome Sun’ in palawa kani, one of the Aboriginal languages used in Tasmania.
The students who participated in the Global Café group are:
Poppy W, Evie M, Sadie F, Henry S, Ada S, Tessa L.P, Elliott P, Thomas W, Margot M and Hudson M.
