Principal News

Hello everyone,
As you are aware, Danielle Bresnehan is currently on leave and representing Tasmania at the 2023 Hockey Australia Masters Championships in Perth! In her absence, we are the delegated Teachers in Charge.
Taroona’s Got Talent
Recently, we celebrated the amazing talents of our students through Taroona’s Got Talent, a lunchtime initiative organised by our Student Parliament. We saw talents ranging from plate-spinning to song-writing and everything in between, and we saw so many students developing their skills as Self-Managers, Communicators and Collaborators. A big thank you to Alanna Carne for all of the work and organisation that went into this week-long program. We are sure there are people already planning their item for next year…
Celebrations of Learning
We have many celebrations of learning to share – recently our Year 1/2 classes went on excursion to the South Hobart rivulet to see if they could spy a platypus! Whilst they didn’t come across a platypus this time, they did welcome Pete Walsh into their classrooms last week. Pete was only too happy to answer some of their excellent questions about platypuses, their habitat and his conservation work.

This week on Tuesday, our Kinders had a very special visit by an ambulance and two of our parents who are paramedics. As part of a health and wellbeing focus, students had the opportunity to ask questions about the role of a paramedic, and they even tested out some of the ambulance equipment.

Our Year 3/4 cohort have been working extremely hard and cannot wait to share their Genius Hour projects with their families today. This project-based learning opportunity has given children the opportunity to pose and investigate an inquiry question of their choosing. Using their skills as Researchers, Thinkers, Communicators and Self-Managers, they have each prepared a presentation to be shared with their families and some lucky classes on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. These fascinating projects are about all sorts of different topics close to our students’ hearts.

SWSP
This fortnight, students in Years 1 – 6 have been participating in a Swimming and Water Safety Program at the Collegiate Pool. We have been so impressed by our students’ skills as Self-Managers (lost property has been kept to a minimum) and their consistent demonstration of our school values of Resilience and Excellence. Well done to all students who have attended Swimming and Water Safety.
Evidences of Learning
This term, you will have noticed teachers sharing evidences of learning with families via Seesaw. These evidences of learning are part of the Department for Education, Children and Young People’s updated reporting process. They will demonstrate what each child has learned about a particular topic and provide feedback on how they can improve in the future. A range of evidences of learning have and will be shared over the course of the year, along with our usual mid-year and end of year reporting.
Class Placements
In the first two weeks of Term 4, parents / carers will be given the opportunity to make a class placement request for their child for the following year. This should be communicated to Danielle Bresnehan either by email (danielle.bresnehan@decyp.tas.gov.au), phone call (call 6227 8325 to make a time to speak to Danielle) or a formal meeting. A class placement request will only be considered on educational grounds. Class placements will be shared in the last week of Term 4.
As always at Taroona Primary, Term 3 has been a busy term of learning and growth for our students and teachers alike. We look forward to welcoming you back in Term 4 (Monday, 16th of October) for our final term of 2023!
Kind regards,
Koby Blizzard and Felicity West
Maths Relay
Jamie, Oscar, Ella and Maddie represented Taroona on Sunday 24 September at the 2023 Maths Relay competition. The team was fantastic, they completed some very difficult problem solving questions with enthusiasm and resilience. Over 30 schools participated, it was an exciting event! Congratulations Team Taroona!

Salvaged Art Exhibition 2023
Over the weekend, Kinder Wombats entered a sculpture in the Salvaged Art Exhibition in Kingborough. It was titled 'Magical Taroona' and was a collection of wands. The sticks were collected during a Nature Play session and then decorated using scrap and upcycled materials.
Our youngest students were super excited to receive a Highly Commended award on Friday night. Some families joined Mrs. Wilson to attend the opening ceremony. Well done Kinder Wombats!

3A
3A have uploaded work to the below padlet link that they are proud of!
PE
Hello to the Taroona PS community!
We have had a wonderful Term 3 which was filled with fantastic experiences.
Our students from K-6 in Physical Education have had their circus hats on as we explore a variety of circus skills. It’s a lovely experience to observe the joy of juggling and spinning plates on sticks. I have encouraged students not to use their dinner plates at home! One student did ask when do we get to swallow swords. Of course, that’s not in the curriculum!
A friendly reminder that our Taroona Primary School Yr 3-6 Swimming Carnival will be in Term 4 on Friday 20th October. The carnival is filled with fun activities for students and will also focus on selecting our Interschool swimming squad.
Keep smiling. Keep moving.

Attending school: Every day. On time
Going to school every day gives your child every chance to learn, grow and connect with their friends and teachers. When kids are unwell it’s important for them to stay home to rest and recover, but allowing kids to stay home because they don’t want to go to school can cause more harm than good. Remember, early intervention can help prevent behaviours from becoming longer-term habits.
If you are struggling to get your child to school because they don’t want to go, please speak to your child’s classroom teacher or support staff so they can offer suggestions. Additionally, this article about school refusal from the Raising Children Network might be of use.
It’s also important for kids to get to school on time and ready to learn. Some days things just don’t go as planned and it’s simply not possible to get out the door on time, but this shouldn’t be every day. If you are struggling to make it to school before 8:50am, you may find this article from the Raising Children Network useful.
Having an evening and morning routine can be an enormous help to ensure a smooth start to your day. For example, making lunches, having a shower and laying out uniforms the evening before can make all the difference.
Running around trying to find a shoe, drink bottle or library book at 8:30 am can send anyone into a tailspin. Getting kids actively involved in their school routine can help too. Work together to make a schedule and get them involved in following the routine.
If you don’t think coming 10 minutes late every day makes a difference, please see the chart below. Every day and every minute counts.
When your child misses just…. | That equals… | Which is… | From Kinder to Year 12 that equals…. |
10 minutes a day | 50 minutes of learning each week | Nearly 1.5 weeks of school per year | Nearly ½ a year of learning |
20 minutes a day | 1 hour and 40 minutes of learning each week | Nearly 2.5 weeks per year | Nearly a year of learning |
30 minutes a day | 2.5 hours (½ day) of learning each week | 4 weeks per year | Nearly 1.5 years of learning |
60 minutes a day | 5 hours ( a whole day) of learning each week | 8 weeks per year or almost a whole term | Over 2.5 years of learning |

Year 3-6 Triathlon - 1 December
It’s time to start thinking about The All Schools Triathlon!
Entry is $25 and students can enter as an individual, as part of a team or do both the individual event and the team event!
Teams can be made up of 2 or 3 students. They can be mixed teams of boys/girls and/or mixed in year levels e.g.: Year 3 – 4 or Year 5 – 6.
Students also need to provide their own roadworthy bike (for the individual event and for bike riders in the team event).
For further information go to www.schoolstriathlonchallenge.com.
N.B. Transport to and from the event must be organised by parents.
Taking Medication at School
A reminder to our families that if your child requires any medication at school that a medication administration form needs to be completed. If there is ongoing medication, this form needs to be renewed annually.
