Vision, Values and Learning Assets in Action
This term we are seeing our school vision, values and learning assets in action as we continue to support our children to be creative thinkers, respectful collaborators, courageous learners and empowered citizens.
Last Monday our Year 5-6 debating team travelled to Bellerieve Primary School to participate in the first round of this year's Primary Interschool Debating competition. Throughout the debates, the students courageously demonstrated our school values of creativity, respect, excellence, resilience and collaboration and many learning assets, including being thinkers, communicators and self-managers. The next round of debates will be held here at Taroona with 28 teams expected onsite! Thank you to Frances Thorp for supporting the debating teams to develop the required knowledge, skills and understandings to engage in this exciting learning opportunity each fortnight.
Science week is providing many exciting learning opportunties for our students, including presentations for 5-6 students delivered by Young Tassie Scientists Marlvin Anemey Tewara - Microscopic Mischief (Medical Studies and Environmental Health); Cinti Iha – Algae Explorer! (Marine Biology); and Madeleine Taylor - Working with Miniscule Magnets (Chemistry). Grade 2-3 & 3-4 classes are scheduled to participate in the Festival of Bright Ideas and the Antarctic Festival and the 1-2 Classes will be visiting the Molesworth Environmental Centre.
Next week is Book Week, and we are very much looking forward to immersing ourselves in quality literature and of course running our annual events inclduing the book week quiz, daily shared reading to daily fitness groups and our spectacular book week parade. Given this is a student only event we will be sure to post photos to our school Facebook page as soon as possible following the parade on Wednesday morning. See below for all of the details.
Best wishes

School Intentions 2023
School planning for 2023 is underway. In order to assist us in this important work, it would be greatly appreciated if families could let the office know ASAP of any changes for 2023, expecially if your family is anticipating a move away from Taroona next year. Please email taroona.primary@education.tas.gov.au.

PE
Hello to the Taroona PS community!
We have had a wonderful start to Term 4 with the exciting Year 6 camp which was filled with fantastic experiences.
At the moment in Physical Education, we are fortunate to have AFL Tasmania at Taroona PS offering clinics. The clinics are filled with skills and drills. All students are enjoying the challenges offered and noticeably progressing. The clinics have involved all Year 3-6 students.
Our K-2 students in Physical Education have their dancing shoes on as we explore a variety of traditional and modern dances. It’s a lovely experience to observe the joy of dance.
A friendly reminder that our Taroona Primary School Year 3-6 Swimming Carnival will be held on Thursday 29 September. The carnival is filled with fun activities for students and will also focus on selecting our Interschool swimming squad.
Keep smiling. Keep moving.

WANTED: Dinosaurs!

We are looking for donations of toy dinosaurs and Jurassic play materials to be used for the creation of a Dino-World!
If you have any at home no longer being played with, and would like to donate, please drop them to our Office area.
Every school day counts
Getting kids to school isn’t always easy. But being at school is the best place for our kids.
If your child is unwell, they need to stay home. But if your child is well enough to attend school, they should be at school. Every day, Monday to Friday.
Reality of missing school
Data shows us that regular school attendance is one of the best things a child can do to set them up for success. But if they don’t attend, things get harder for them.
Let’s do the maths:
- If your child misses even just one day a fortnight, that adds up to 20 days of the school year. That’s the same as missing four whole weeks of school!
- If they miss one day a week, that doubles to eight weeks of school they’ll never get back.
- Over the course of their childhood, that equals two and a half years of vital education they’ll never receive…
We mean it, every school day counts. It all adds up.
Bright futures begin at school
The data also tells us something else: the better a child’s attendance rate, the better off they’ll be. Their future will be filled with more opportunities.
School is where they learn and grow alongside their friends, and where they benefit the most. Going to school not only promotes academic success, but also helps build important social skills, relationships and confidence.
Good attendance habits in primary school lead to good attendance habits in high school. This will help expand your child’s options even further as they grow older.
Watch this video to see the benefits of going to school.
It’s ok if you need help
If you’re struggling to get your child to school, help is available. Please talk to us at school about your situation. We’ll support you, in whatever way we can.
If you need support translating or interpreting this information, contact the Translating and Interpreting Service on 131 450.
WWVP and Vaccination Reminder
New requirements for record keeping have been in effect from August 2018 which specifies that all sites are required to keep visitor sign in registers. All volunteers, external providers, contractors and visitors (where appropriate) must sign in using the visitor kiosk.
A DoE site must request the RWVP card and perform a status check via the DoJ website each time someone presents at or attends a site in their respective capacity. The status check will return current information and indicate any conditions applying to a registration.
If a search fails to return information, this indicates a change in registration has occurred. DoE staff at the worksite must sign off on the visitor register to confirm that RWVP verification has occurred.
The Department requirement is that you must present your RWVP card EVERY time you sign in.
All visitors who come to our school with the intention of volunteering are also required to be fully vaccinated and must be able to show proof of this EVERY time you sign in.

Zones of Regulation

Self-regulation is the ability to understand and manage your behaviour and your reactions to feelings and things happening around you. It includes being able to:
- regulate reactions to strong emotions like frustration, excitement, anger and embarrassment
- calm down after something exciting or upsetting
- focus on a task
- refocus attention on a new task
- control impulses
- behave in ways that help you get along with other people.
Self-regulation helps children:
- learn at school – self-regulation gives you the ability to sit and listen in the classroom
- behave in socially acceptable ways - self-regulation gives you the ability to control impulses
- make friends - self-regulation gives you the ability to take turns in games and conversation, share toys, and express emotions in appropriate ways
- become more independent - self-regulation gives you the ability to make appropriate decisions about behaviour and learn how to behave in new situations with less guidance from others
We teach the ZONES of Regulation, from Kindergarten to Year 6, to help our learners gain skills in self-regulation: to understand what’s expected of them, control their own wants and needs, imagine other people’s perspectives, and see both sides of a situation. In higher year levels, we support our learners to become better at planning, sticking with difficult tasks, behaving in socially appropriate ways and considering how their behaviour affects other people.
Here are some practical ways that you can help your child learn and practice self-regulation:
- Develop language for emotions – when you see your child showing a particular emotion, label it for them and talk about it e.g. “You have a big smile on your face. You must be happy to see the dog”.
- Label the emotions your child sees in you and other people e.g. “Emma’s sad because she misses Poppy”.
- Talk about the emotions that characters in books, TV shows or movies might be experiencing e.g. “Look at Ruby’s face. She looks excited”.
- Show your child how you recognize your emotions and help them recognize theirs e.g. “When I was interrupted all the time, my heart began racing and I felt really hot. Does that happen to you when you are interrupted and feel angry?”
- Help your child work out how their body feels when they’re experiencing and emotion e.g. “You look worried. Do you have a tight feeling in your tummy?”
- Teach your child ways to calm down from strong emotions e.g. counting to 10 or taking 5 deep breaths
- Work with your child to develop a list of things they could do when they notice strong emotions building up e.g. go for a run, listen to music or squeeze a pillow.
